And in this corner...
Cerith Gardiner - published in Aleteia on 03/30/22

When Lent kicks off there’s a bit of a buzz as you decide to do something meaningful to mark this special period of time in the Christian faith. However, all those good intentions start to wane as the weeks go by and the realities and stresses of everyday life take over.

With the global situation creating uncertainty and anxiety, it seems doubly hard to not succumb to temptation and head to that cookie jar, but hold your horses, you can do this! There are less than three weeks to go until we celebrate Christ’s Resurrection, and just think how satisfying it will be to know that you held on for those 40 long days.

MAKE ACCESS DIFFICULTIf you’re giving up a certain snack or drink, place any that have left in an area that’s hard to reach. If things get drastic you could lock it up and get someone to hide the key.

If you want to reduce screen time, try putting your phone or laptop in a drawer so you won’t be tempted to look it every few minutes.

BE INSPIRED BY JESUS
You could add an image of Jesus, or maybe a crucifix, next to any temptations so that you’ll have a physical reminder of why you are making this effort.

NOTIFY OTHERS
If you’re finding it hard to stick to your guns, make sure your loved ones are aware. By telling friends and families that you’re giving up something important to you, they can offer you encouragement and support. Also, kids are great at being your support squad.

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVEInstead of thinking about what you’re giving up, think more about what you are gaining. Whether it’s a healthier diet or a greater understanding of the power of temptation, use this opportunity to embrace the whole 40 days as a beautiful spiritual journey bringing you even closer to God.

SEEK A LITTLE HELP FROM ABOVEJesus faced temptation by the devil, yet he resisted, using the Word of God to guide Him. Lean on Him for inspiration and follow his example to offer your temporary suffering to God our Father.

And in this corner...
In February 2022, the Vatican released statistics showing that in 2020 the number of Catholics in the world increased by 16 million to 1.36 billion.
That means that 17.7% of the world’s population is Catholic. Of this total, 48% are in the Americas, with 28% living in South America. Following recent trends, the Catholic Church grew most rapidly in Asia (+1.8%) and Africa (+2.1%) with very slight growth in Europe (0.3%).
Statistical snapshots
Worldwide, the number of Catholics per priest rose from 3,245 in 2019 to 3,314 in 2020. But more than 50% of priests live and minister in the global North — while more than two-thirds of Catholics live someplace else. While 236 million Africans are Catholics, the U.S. and Canada are home to 84 million Catholics — but these two countries have almost the same number of priests as the whole of Africa. The Catholic Church in the U.S. has historically been served by priests from elsewhere — including Ireland, Poland, Italy — to support its first and second generation immigrant members. Now, the Catholic Church in the global North is significantly supported by priests and religious who come from countries in the global South.

Catholics in Ireland
Father O’Reilly told his congregation, “Anyone who has a special need and wants to be prayed over, please come forward.” So, Seamus got in line and when it was his turn, Father O’Reilly asked, “Seamus, what is your special need?” Seamus replied, “Father, I need you to pray for help with my hearing.” So, the priest put his hands on Seamus’s ears and then prayed and prayed and prayed with the whole congregation joining with great enthusiasm. After a few minutes, Father O’Reilly removed his hands, stood back and asked, “Seamus, how is your hearing?” Seamus replied, “I don’t know. It ain’t ’til next week.”
--------------
Maggie never went to church. She always promised to go but never did. Father Sullivan was astounded when she suddenly showed up for Sunday service. Thereafter Maggie was there every Sunday. Three months later the pastor asked her, “What happened to you? You always dodged church and now it looks like you can't get enough?" Maggie replied, “It's this new car of mine, they told me the warranty will lapse if I miss even one service!”
--------------
Sister Mary asked her students, "Does anyone know what we mean by sins of omission?" Paddy replied, "Aren't those the sins we could have committed, and now regret that we didn’t?”

Young Danny was waiting outside the grocery store while his mother shopped. While he was waiting, he was approached by a man who asked him, “Son, can you tell me where the Post Office is?” Danny replied, “Just go straight down this street a couple of blocks and turn to your right.” The man thanked the boy kindly and said, “By the way, I’m Father Sullivan, the new pastor at St. Kevin's. I’d like for you to come to church on Sunday. I’ll show you how to get to Heaven.” Danny replied, “Right, you must be joking. You don’t even know the way to the Post Office!”
--------------
Erin told Mick, “If you don't stop snoring, I'm going to toss you out on your ear!” Mick asked, “Does it upset you that much?” Erin replied, “It’s not just me, it annoys the entire congregation.”
